If you are looking into a distance
learning program as an option to become a veterinary technician in New
York State here are a few guidelines to keep in mind.
- The NY Dept of
Education requires graduation from an AVMA accredited program or its
equivalence to sit for licensure and then work as a veterinary
technician in NY State.
- Not all distance learning programs are
the same. To be approved by the Dept of Education you must have a
degree in Veterinary Technology upon completion of the coursework to
meet the state requirements.
- Some distance learning programs
offer certificates, which can be misleading. Most certificates course
work does not equate to a degree in Veterinary Technology
NYSAVT
strongly recommends that you contact the Department of Education directly
before entering any alternative program to make sure it meets the state
requirements. New York State
presently has seven active AVMA accredited programs within NY State
offering degrees in Veterinary Technology.
