CPR: The Road to Recovery (LVT/DVM)

Although the survival rate of people that experience cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) is over 20%, only 6%of dogs and cats survive to hospital discharge.  Historically, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has largely been based on extrapolation from human medicine.  In 2011, over 100 veterinary specialists began a collaboration called the Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation (RECOVER).  The RECOVER initiative systematically evaluated research and clinical evidence of veterinary CPR and generated 101 small animal evidence-based guidelines from the analysis. 

This lecture is intended to review the RECOVER CPR guidelines pertinent to small animal clinical practice.

At the end of this lecture, participants should be able to

1) explain the purpose of the RECOVER initiative

2) rapidly diagnose CPA in dogs and cats based on a standardized ABC (airway, breathing, circulation) exam

3) perform small animal basic and advanced life support based on the RECOVER guidelines

Human-Wildlife Conflict Victims and Other Wildlife Emergencies (LVT/DVM)

Abstract:
In this presentation I briefly introduce the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic (BWRC) and some of the more interesting and challenging wildlife cases we’ve seen. I discuss the major threats leading to imperiled wildlife supported by cases from the BWRC. Among the cases are examples of injured, orphaned, neglected or otherwise imperiled wildlife patients, many of which were victims of human wildlife conflict or the illegal pet trade. Many of these cases arrived as an emergency.  History, intake, treatment and outcomes will be discussed. Basic rules for interactions with wildlife, as well as species-specific tips on handling and wildlife emergency response and stabilization will be given. Some simple methods and basic advice on non-lethal conflict resolution for wildlife will be presented.  Lastly, some commonly seen cases of animals that need no rescue intervention will be introduced, and some common myths dispelled.


Participants should be able to:

Explain Common causes for wildlife imperilment and human-wildlife conflict

Describe basic rules around wildlife, emergency response and stabilization

Identify Common emergencies seen in wildlife medicine

Recognize common scenarios in wildlife rescue erroneously perceived as an emergency

Explain the diverse needs of different species and the need for species specific training in wildlife medicine
