Dr. Susan P. Cohen has been called a pioneer in the fields of pet loss, human-animal interaction, and the human side of veterinary practice. Since 1982 Dr. Cohen has helped pet lovers make decisions about the illness of their pets. She developed the first-ever Pet Loss Support Group and began an animal assisted activity program that took the then-unusual form of having volunteers work with their own pets. She originated many training programs for workers in the veterinary and social service fields, and she has been a field instructor for several schools of social work. She has written several book chapters and scholarly articles on social work, veterinary practice, and the human-animal bond. Her most recent chapter is “Loss of a Therapy Animal” in Aubrey Fine’s, “Handbook on Animal-Assisted Therapy, Fourth Edition: Foundations and Guidelines for Animal-Assisted Interventions”, 2015.

           

These days she consults with veterinary groups on client and professional communication, compassion fatigue, and how to make practice fun again. She facilitates an online support group for veterinarians (VIN Foundation Vets4Vets) and in-person groups for animal welfare workers (ASPCA) and teaches online workshops. She lectures widely to veterinary colleges and conferences, colleges of social work, veterinary technician programs, and human health groups on communication, pet loss and bereavement, human-animal interaction, client relations, compassion fatigue, and career development.  She is Chairperson of SWAHAB (Social Workers Advancing the Human-Animal Bond), the first such committee of the National Association of Social Workers. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, and Smithsonian Magazine. In addition, she has made numerous television and radio addresses nationwide, including “The Today Show,” "20-20," and "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

Back to Basics: Skills Every Technician Should be Utilizing

Everyone wants a fancy new multi-parameter monitor, high end ultrasound, and full in-house laboratory at their disposal. It is all too easy to get lost in relying on expensive machinery and forgetting the foundations we learned in school. Whether you are a new student or a seasoned graduate, whether you work in emergency medicine, general clinical practice, or specialty, it is paramount to be hands on with your patients. The technician is at the center of nursing care, and obtaining and interpreting vital parameters of our patients should be at the forefront. Clinical signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate and effort, capillary refill time, etc, can yield a wealth of information. We will also examine some basic and inexpensive tests that every veterinary practice should have, such as PCV/TS, blood glucose, and others. Once you have them, what should you do with these values? Do you contact your doctor? Do you write them down in the chart and move on? The ability to understand and evaluate your patient will be the central focus.

Measuring the exhaled amounts of carbon dioxide is a valuable tool in verifying the adequacy of ventilation during sedation and anesthesia of the patient. This lecture will cover the importance of monitoring, as well as cover the advantages of end tidal carbon dioxide monitoring in particular. While a majority of the presentation will aim to cover terrestrial animals, anesthetic techniques as well as a brief comparative anatomy of marine mammals will be covered. The background for both authors is in the field of zoo/aquarium medicine. Little has been published regarding carbon dioxide levels in marine mammals, which led them to their current project involving obtaining end tidal carbon dioxide values from awake patients. The California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) was specifically chosen as the subject of this investigation because the end tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) values that are obtained from these animals under sedation have been much higher than normal reference values for terrestrial mammals. It is believed that these high accumulations of carbon dioxide are due to the dive reflex in marine mammals. Little has been published regarding awake carbon dioxide levels in sea lions, and therefore obtaining voluntary EtCO2 values will allow comparison of awake values versus values obtained under sedation. Sea Lions are very tractable and the training of new behaviors, such as those needed to capture the awake values, is readily accepted. Overall, obtaining voluntary EtCO2 levels in awake sea lions is a relatively easy behavior to train and will be useful in providing a baseline of information to use if these animals are sedated in the future. This project has been approved as a new medical husbandry behavior at the Wildlife Conservation Society and values are being collected on a continuous basis.

Cardiac Emergencies, Heat Stroke & Shock

Cardiac Emergencies:

This lecture will review some of the more common cardiac emergencies and the technician’s role in their patient’s initial stabilization. Topics to review will include: arrhythmias (V-tach, heart block, SVT, etc), pericardial effusion and tamponade, and congestive heart failure. The focus will be on early identification of these cases through clinical signs and examination, and how the technician can contribute to early stabilization. Some underlying pathophysiology of the problems will be included.

Heat Stroke:

On a typical summer day, a panicked owner runs into your office carrying their English bulldog in respiratory distress. What do you do? This lecture will focus on heat stroke including pathophysiology, effects on the clotting cascade and potential development of DIC, active cooling and the danger of rebound hypothermia, and more. We will discuss how breed variations can contribute to susceptibility, such as with brachycephalic breeds. This lecture will focus on the technician’s role in stabilization and treatment of heat stroke.

Shock:

We have all heard the term “shock”. Whether in the clinic or on tv, “shock” is everywhere. Is it all the same, or are there different types of shock? Do you understand what shock means and how it is impacting your patient? Do we give fluids or not? Do we need vasopressors and active inotropes? We will review the underlying pathophysiology of circulatory shock, different classification types of circulatory shock, and how to approach/treat them. Monitoring the shocky patient is critical, specifically evaluating and monitoring their response to treatment.

Neonate Nutrition, Nutritional Management of Pancreatitis & Nutritional Support of Gastrointestinal Disease

Pancreatitis is the most common exocrine pancreatic disease in both dogs and cats. Nutritional support of these patients is considered a key component of successful treatment. This lecture will explain the clinical signs and the key nutritional factors of the disease. A variety of diet options will be discussed. A case of patient with severe pancreatitis is used to demonstrate the severity of the disease and encourage discussion of a variety of nutritional support options.

Neonate Nutrition-Feeding Puppies and Kittens from Birth to Weaning:

Healthy dams and queens are often able to produce an adequate supply of milk to feed their litter of puppies or kittens. Unfortunately, there are times when they cannot and the neonates must receive supplemental nutrition or be feed entirely without the benefit of their mother's milk. There are a number of commercial formulas available on the market today and even more recipes for homemade milk replacements available online and in books. This lecture will explain the key nutritional requirements of neonatal puppies and kittens. We will discuss the pros and cons of a number of diets intended for supplementing or feeding new born puppies and kittens.
